Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Children, Education and Skills. There’s a lot of information on the microsite about our ambitions and priorities for the city – but I wanted to let you know a little about the team you’ll be joining and what we’re looking for in our new Director.

Newcastle is an ambitious child friendly Newcastle that is proud of its children and young people. Our commitment, passion, creativity and pride is second to none. We’ve committed to delivering improved outcomes for all of our communities. As part of the city’s commitment to young people and their improved outcomes we are seeking to appoint an outstanding Director of Children’s and Education Services who will lead, manage and shape excellent services that make a real difference our youngest residents.

You will join an exceptionally strong team of political and corporate leaders who are wholly focussed on delivering for children and young people. We’re looking to appoint a Director who fits with our inclusive culture and values and who really understands how to improve young people lives. You’ll need the ability to know when to take a “helicopter view” and when to dive down in the details; your ability to feel equally at home working at a national, regional or local level will also be important. We’re a core city with a key role in the north east region – and we need to continue punching above our weight and make a real difference to influencing the future of local government in England too.

Covid has consolidated the council’s role as ‘leader of place’ and the management team have worked across sectoral and organisational boundaries to support the most vulnerable as well as helping businesses and communities affected by the pandemic.

We have introduced award winning collaborative leadership across the city. Whether it’s our ground-breaking work to improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of people in Newcastle, or our cross-sectoral work on embedding our net zero targets, or our plan to eliminate homelessness by 2022, or our drive to increase jobs by creating investment opportunities, this is a council with a strong track record of delivery.

So if you share our values, want to shape the future of a city where innovation and inclusion are our driving forces, and have the ambition, drive and energy to take on this demanding role, I look forward to hearing from you.

Tom Warburton
Interim Chief Executive, Newcastle City Council
